It took until I got into my 30’s to understand the importance of self-love. I have always loved helping others and making sure everyone else was happy, but I never put that same positive, loving energy into myself. It took years for me to be able to look in the mirror and really see my skin, my eyes, my smile, my entire body.
I have never been classified as having the “ideal beauty image” by society’s standards, making me insecure about even the smallest detail on my body that wasn’t up to par. I never had a thigh gap, a small waist with a six-pack, or a big booty (which is a sin in the black community). Since I was a teenager, I have had stretch marks, acne, and my weight fluctuates because of my PCOS.
There are many people that I would consider beautiful who suffer from body dysmorphia disorder. They will avoid looking in the mirror, taking pictures, and social events because they are anxious, ashamed, or embarrassed by their self-image. Social media, TV, and magazines have us comparing our bodies to celebrities, Instagram models, and fitness experts.
The comment section under the pictures or videos of someone who has a body deformity, a plus-sized or skinny body, or stretch marks and cellulite can end up being rude and disgusting. The comments have to be pretty damaging to a person’s self-esteem, even if they are confident and love themselves.
We are so used to seeing a certain photoshopped or plastic surgery-filled image of perfection that society looks down upon people who don’t fit that depiction. “Hurt people, hurt people.” If more people loved themselves, there wouldn’t be so much projection of insecurities and hurt onto someone else.
No matter what you do or how you look, people will always find a reason to criticize and judge you. I realized that I would never be considered perfect in the public eye and that is fine with me. The judgment of other people does not define who I am as a person. Nobody can do the self-healing and self-love work for me.
I have to be secure enough to accept my flaws and learn to embrace them. If someone doesn’t like me or the way I look, I must be strong enough to accept it and move forward with confidence. I need to love myself before I can love someone else or allow someone to love me. If we collectively started loving ourselves more, there would be far less hate and more compassion for one another in this world.
Saying daily affirmations in the mirror helped me feel more confident and ready to take on the day with a more positive outlook. Here are 26 daily affirmations that I say in the mirror every day that helped me flourish in my self-love journey:
