I was watching the movie I Am Sam when The Beatle's song “Blackbird” started playing. The song had me thinking about taking the lessons that we’ve learned in life and continuing to move forward instead of waiting on the perfect time to “fly.” This is the verse that replayed in my mind:

“Take these broken wings and learn to fly/All your life/You were only waiting for this moment to arise.”

Though Paul McCartney wrote these lyrics with the blackbird symbolizing black women’s struggles, discrimination, and hardships during the Civil Rights Movement, I will tweak the viewpoint.

Let me start by saying you never know what you are capable of accomplishing unless you try.

Sometimes we want to wait for the perfect moment, opportunity, or even outside validation and support. Still, nothing will come to fruition until you start taking the necessary steps towards achieving your goals.

We all have a past consisting of traumas, baggage, and wounds, or even circumstances that have “broken our wings” and made it hard to soar freely and confidently. Our past can instill fear and doubt into our minds freezing our forward movement and causing us to compare ourselves to the successes others have achieved constantly. The more we compare our accomplishments, successes, and skills with someones else’s, the longer we remain stagnant.

It’s quite alright to be curious about something you want to do, try it out, and see if it’s for you. I call it an art of expression and creating opportunities with passion. We all have the ability to see beyond the illusion of fear, and after we start to see things clearly, that usually leads us to our dreams.

When I started something new that I’d never done before, I would procrastinate to get the project done. At first, I thought it was because I was a procrastinator, but after being in therapy, I found out it was because of self-doubt, self-sabotaging, perfectionism, and insecurities.

Most of the time, I gave up before I got started. It wasn’t because I wasn’t capable, didn’t have the skill, or wasn’t intelligent enough to get the job done; it was because I didn’t think I was good or worthy enough.

Sometimes we grow up believing the worst about ourselves, and how we feel about ourselves most of the time isn’t even true. The more confidence you have within and the self-love you show yourself, the more it will help you block out your fears.

It’s challenging to keep pushing when you feel like you don’t have the motivation, are doubting yourself, and aren’t getting support, but it’s even easier to give up and go back to old patterns and routines. Your daily habits, discipline, consistency, and contributions to your happiness and goals reflect your daily outcomes of gaining success.

Take all of the lessons, experiences, and valuable moments so that you can use them to your advantage. Always remain teachable, and that way, you can learn from your mistakes and be open-minded to ideas and inspiration from others. If you push yourself hard enough, you will get to the point where you end up taking a leap of faith and hoping for the best possible outcome.

No matter what, never give up, and don’t let anyone’s opinion of you win. You will never know what you can accomplish if you don’t spread your wings and fly!
