Watching the movie Vivo last night had me thinking about how we attempt to control and perfect a goal we want to accomplish. We have a set plan in our minds and get annoyed when things don’t turn out the way we want. Sometimes we are so focused on the method that we forget to enjoy the lessons learned, discoveries, and opportunities obtained along the way. The power in taking on the obstacles and lessons one day at a time helps let go of the need to control the outcome and be thankful for the pitstops along the journey.
Imagine two people headed towards the same destination. One person is panicking, overbearing, pessimistic, and doubtful, while the other is optimistic, ecstatic, and positive. Who do you think will enjoy the journey more? No matter which person you decide to be, there will always be hurdles to jump over.
You might think the optimistic person is insane for moving so freely. Trust me, they have the same fears as pessimists, but they try to stay in the moment and not be so self-critical. Moving without restraint can take even the heaviest of loads off of your back.
Wait. Breathe. Take in a moment of gratitude.
You can either roll with the punches or miss the hidden gems that are right in front of you. Sometimes we are put into certain situations to learn a lesson from the circumstances. You can utilize the newfound insight or keep repeating the same cycles until you know how to grasp the importance of the concept. At times, we take for granted the blessings that are right in front of our faces because we want to speed through the process.
Example:
You kept praying for a car but couldn’t afford to buy one. Your family puts their money together to buy you a compact car. You are happy that you could finally buy a vehicle but disappointed that it’s not the SUV you’ve always wanted. You buy the car and complain about how small it is, and it’s not the color you wanted, but now you can drive to work instead of catching the bus. Catch my drift? There are people in this world that pray every day for something we don’t appreciate.
We dig ourselves into a hole because we sometimes place unrealistic expectations on things we should be thankful for receiving. When it doesn’t meet or exceed our hopes and dreams, we forget to recognize the assistance and guidance while continuously longing for more.
We should play the hand we are dealt and keep striving towards our goals. The pursuit of obtaining your goals is up to you. We can hold on tightly to the wheel on a road of rage or sit back and enjoy the ride one moment at a time.
